MRS. P. CURRIE/TENBY - The death occurred suddenly, but peacefully at Cardiff University Hospital (The Heath) on Wednesday, June 14, of Mrs. Philomena Currie, of Tenby.

Affectionately known to all as Phil, she had, after a very happy childhood in St. Florence where she was born, lived most of her life in Tenby where she attended St. Teresa’s Convent.

Phil had a beautiful singing voice and was regularly chosen for leading roles in many of the convent’s productions, some of which were performed in Tenby’s Little Theatre.

During her late teens, she spent some time in Southampton working in a department store and this was followed by a short spell in Paris as an au pair.

Phil and Pat, her husband, ran a successful guest house in South Cliff Street where they brought up their daughters, Helen and Sarah. As a family, they had many happy holidays in Ireland where Phil informally researched her father’s background in and around Cahir in Co Tipperary.

Phil was a prolific reader, enjoying a variety of authors and she was always delighted to received books as gifts. She also loved all sorts of music. Partly from her Irish holidays and background, she became an avid collector of Maeve Binchey novels.

When the girls were older, Phil returned to college in Haverfordwest to obtain her IT qualifications. She then joined the NHS in the maternity department of Withybush Hospital. She worked there for many years where she was held in great respect and affection by her work colleagues in the department.

Phil was extremely proud of her daughters, Helen and Sarah, and was a devoted grandmother to Molly and Jack.

Phil’s funeral took place on June 27 at Holyrood and St. Teilo’s Catholic Church, Tenby, followed by cremation at Parc Gwyn Crematorium, Narberth.

The service was conducted by Father Clement OP and the eulogy was delivered by Phil’s sister, Paulette O’Brien Turnbull. Marc Shepherd read a poem ‘I’m Free’ (by S. L. Mosely).
