An independent review has not yet been carried out to verify claims of how much the Long Course Weekend – boosted by public money – benefited the local area.
Pembrokeshire County Council’s cabinet is to receive a report on Monday on Activity Wales’ triathlon event – which was given £20,000 by the authority this year – outlining the success of the event.
A number of concerns around the event have been raised in the report, highlighting key issues that need to be reviewed prior to next year’s Long Course Weekend event.
The concerns raised include road closure timings, routes and duration of closures and the impact on businesses, public transport and Royal Mail.
The report recommends providing the same sum for next year’s event – from the programme for administration reserves fund – with a focus on promoting Pembrokeshire.
Cabinet member for infrastructure, licensing and major events Clr. Phil Baker is recommended to further review the event and consider an independent assessment of the benefits, subject to budget being available as well as working with the organiser to develop and monitor an action plan to address the specific concerns highlighted from the 2019 event.
The action plan has a focus on economic assessment feedback, future developments for the event including review of Tudor Square, contingency planning for incidents and a communication plan.
Organisers provided a review of the event – the largest multi-sport event in the country – which saw 10,600 athletes from 44 countries take part, with an hour-long television show screened in more than 100 countries.
The report states that each athlete travelled with three to four others on average and stayed around three nights.
The event also supports local schools and communities, as well as sports clubs.
