Businesses in The Norton in Tenby have written to the town's Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas, expressing concern over the current state of some of the buildings in the street.

Proprietor of the Castle View Hotel, Mr. Mark Duckett, wrote the letter, with support from many other shops, hotels and guest houses in The Norton, claiming that the neglected buildings were having an "adverse effect upon Tenby as a whole" and in particular their businesses.

"Many of our customers have remarked upon the stark signs of neglect along our road and we have noticed the fall-off of passing trade, so critical to the commercial sustainability of our respective businesses," wrote Mr. Duckett.

Properties which have been neglected and boarded up include: The Gate House Hotel, The Pig and Puffin, the former Ocean Hotel, the former Justices Court and two former shops, Zanzibar and Norton Newsagents.

Mr. Duckett and proprietors of the other businesses in The Norton who have signed the letter believe it is time something was done about the situation.

"On the basis that the county council also clearly recognises the downgrading of this prime section of harbour front and its damaging potential toward business and reputation, we request an understanding of any remedial planning and development the authority may already be considering and that rapid remedial action be forwarded to ensure the future protection against the ongoing decline and threat to this great town's heritage, architectural standards and public reputation," concluded Mr. Duckett's letter.

Tenby Town Council agreed with the points and concerns of the letter and agreed it be forwarded to Pembrokeshire County Council and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
