Local politicians are calling on Hywel Dda University Health Board to commit firmly to delivering a new integrated health and well-being centre for Fishguard and north Pembrokeshire — and to set out a clear timetable for making it happen.
The call comes from Elin Jones, Plaid Cymru lead candidate for Ceredigion Penfro, and non-aligned Fishguard North West County Councillor Pat Davies, alongside growing community concern that plans for a modern, purpose-built facility in the town have stalled.
Hywel Dda has previously indicated support for the idea of an Integrated Health Centre in Fishguard, and has held several public consultations on its plans. The centre would serve communities across north Pembrokeshire, from St Davids and Solva in the west to Newport in the east.
However, no firm funding commitment or delivery timeline has been announced, and the existing health centre continues to operate from a building dating back to 1976.
The contrast with Cardigan is stark. The Cardigan Integrated Care Centre — a state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility bringing together GP services, dentistry, pharmacy, diagnostics, mental health and community care under one roof — opened in 2019, funded through a Welsh Government budget agreement secured by Plaid Cymru. Residents of north Pembrokeshire deserve the same quality of joined-up, community-based healthcare.
As Councillor Pat Davies said:"People in Fishguard and across north Pembrokeshire have been patient, and they deserve better than warm words. The health board has shown interest in this project before - but interest alone isn't enough. Our communities need a firm commitment and a clear plan.
“A modern, integrated health centre would transform what's available locally and reduce the pressure on people to travel long distances for care that should be on their doorstep."
Elin Jones, Plaid Cymru lead candidate for Ceredigion Penfro, said:"This is about ensuring that the long-term infrastructure is in place to serve north Pembrokeshire for generations to come. We have seen what is possible when there is political will and investment — the Cardigan Integrated Care Centre stands as a real example of what communities in this part of Wales can achieve. North Pembrokeshire deserves the same.
“I am urging Hywel Dda to move beyond the planning stage and set out a genuine, funded commitment to delivering this centre. If elected, I will continue to push hard for the investment this community needs and deserves."
