Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, has called for an urgent debate on the allocation of council and Housing Association properties within the town this week.

Speaking at Tuesday's meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Brown said that she was very concerned that a number of people prepared to give up two and three-bedroomed houses on the town's estates were unable to find one-bedroomed premises within the resort.

"These people are prepared to give up their homes for families providing they can receive one-bedroomed accommodation in Tenby, but the only places they are being offered are either in Penally, Manorbier or New Hedges," she claimed.

"These are Tenby people and it's not too much for them to ask to stay in Tenby is it?"

Clr. Mrs. Brown pointed out that two one-bedroomed premises in the town had recently been allocated, but neither to Tenby people.

One recipient had been from another town in the south of the county, while the other was from a different county.

"I've nothing against these people, and I do believe that they were on the transfer list for some time, but this does not make any difference to local people waiting for premises in Tenby," she opined.

"I think the time has come for a debate on putting local people back in local accommodation to free up properties in places like The Glebe and Knowling Mead for families."

Members agreed to put the item on the agenda for discussion at their next meeting.

At the suggestion of Clr. Mickey Folland, it was also agreed that the Pembrokeshire County Council housing officer responsible for Tenby be invited to meet with the town council to outline the housing allocation system.
