NFU director general, Terry Jones, addressed Pembrokeshire NFU Cymru members when he spoke at a recent county conference.
Held at the Nantyffin Hotel, Llandissilio, the conference heard from Mr. Jones about the work of the NFU and how the Union has an abundance of willing members to stand up for what is important to the industry.
Mr. Jones said: “NFU is very good at finding solutions to any problems that come our way and I must commend the members in Pembrokeshire, working in tandem with the NFU Cymru staff, for all their work in putting forward to Welsh Government an alternative approach to tackling water quality issues in Wales as opposed to additional NVZ designation.”
Mr. Jones also talked about the way the UK NFUs often work in collaboration on the key policy issues that affect farmers across the UK. “Brexit is a good example of where NFU Cymru, the NFU, NFU Scotland and the Ulster Farmers Union have worked together to send strong and clear messages to all the UK Governments about the importance of food and farming to the UK economy. And we also need to collaborate more with those working in the food supply chain and with environmental organisations.”
NFU Cymru president John Davies, also spoke for the first time in Pembrokeshire since becoming President, and gave members an update regarding a number of issues concerning the Union’s work and priorities, including Brexit, bovine TB and NVZs.
Jeff Evans, NFU Cymru Pembrokeshire County chairman, said: “I’d like to thank Terry Jones for making the journey to Pembrokeshire to speak with us. He spoke about his role in the NFU and how the Union works for us, the members. I’d also like to give thanks, on behalf of the Pembrokeshire NFU County branch, to Stephen James, who has now stepped down as president. Stephen has worked tirelessly for the Union over the past four years as president and prior to that as deputy president and the Union’s TB spokesman and I’m sure he will now be a regular at county meetings.”
NFU Cymru would like to thank HSBC Bank for sponsoring this year’s 11 county conferences across Wales.
