Dr. Michael Slather-Dunn was born in 1923 and died in October, 2002. He qualified as a doctor and specialised in psychiatry.
After holding a post as consultant psychiatrist at St. David's Hospital, Carmarthen, for many years, heart and lung disease forced early retirement. Increased leisure re-aroused a dormant interest in music. He had bought a trumpet in his youth and had practised assiduously for a while. Then one day the trumpet unaccountably disappeared. A household member with sensitive ears was suspected of knowing more than a little about this mystery, but the trumpet, alas, was never seen again!
In retirement, Dr. Dunn taught himself to read music - with a little help from his wife - and taught himself to play the flute with help from no one else whatsoever. His choice of instrument was wise and suited his natural abilities. He was soon making mellifluous sounds and no one was in the least inclined to cause the flute to disappear!
He played his music alone and in private (apart from the presence of family), but gleaned immense enjoyment from it and wiled away very many happy hours. Nothing would please him better than to know that his beloved flute was being used by a talented young musician from a local school.
