In October, Year 12 WBQ students focused on PSE, specifically on road safety, which we hope will be valuable for all our youngsters who are about to start to learn driving.
Year 12 saw a drama presented by the Tiny Giants Theatre Company, entitled New Wheels, who encouraged our students to take a stand against any poor drivers, whether they are friends or relatives. It was a hardhitting, but enjoyable experience and our students welcomed the message. This was followed up by a whole day of workshops and lectures on road safety, in which our students were led to consider the dangers of alcohol or substance abuse and texting whilst driving, how to behave on the scene of an accident and good habits to acquire when learning to drive. Many thanks to Mr. John Gobbi, who organised the event, and to the police, fire and paramedics services, who all delivered those important messages.
Year 12 students have also covered the active citizenship aspect of the PSE module by discussing democracy versus dictatorship and learning about the different ways of voting. Following this, they elected two representatives in each form using the first past the post system.
Each form subsequently chose two candidates (one male, one female) willing to run for the post of Year 12 presidents. The role involves representing Year 12 in the school council and in some governors meetings, as well as working closely with the Head Boy, Head Girl and deputies on matters ranging from the organisation of fund-raising events in school to the improvement of the Sixth Form's working environment and the organisation of social events.
The 11 candidates all prepared a manifesto and an election speech with the support of their forms, and the campaign was altogether busy, vociferous and fun! All candidates presented themselves and made their speeches during WBQ morning in the drama studio in front of the whole of Year 12 and their tutors, and this was followed by a vote.
Overall winners by far were Louis Elston and Anna De'Vall. The other presidential candidates were: Jack James, Ella Brindley, Gareth Williams, Ivan Lesnianski, David Folder, Huw Rowlands, Ella Brace and Beth Williams (some of the other candidates withdrew under pressure!).
Congratulations to all the candidates who threw themselves wholeheartedly into their presidential campaign, and many thanks to all their helpers.
Our next Welsh Baccalaureate focus for this coming half-term will be Team Enterprise and the completion of the Working with Others wider key skill qualification through fund raising for Children in Need.
WEAR IT PINK DAY AT GREENHILL
Greenhill School raised over £1,000 for breast cancer. All the children and staff came into school dressed in pink clothes in aid of the charity. Cakes were made to purchase and all money went to the cause and some children did a sponsored silence. There was a prize for the best dressed pink pupil. It was a very successful fundraising event at Greenhill School.
Year 7 poetry - Splashing across the page!
We have had an amazing reponse to National Poetry Day with hundreds of entries on the theme of water. The winners are: Lucy Brace, Madison Neye, Devika Selvakumar, Laura Bursey, Rosie Howells and Toby Wilson.
Year 8 netball
Year 8 were involved in a very close game with St. David's (writes Nia Murphy). The game ended 9-7 to Greenhill. St. David's played extremely well and were a very strong team. There were excellent performances from all the girls, with great defending and attacking. Everyone kept their space and players were always looking for someone to pass to.
Player of the match was Tyla Hawkshaw - great play by her and always looking for spaces.
Team: Nia Murphy, Tia Brace, Megan Cook, Tyla Hawkshaw, Emily Griffiths, Lillie Murray-Coller, Kelis Davies, Elizabeth Stewart-Walvin, Kacey Keane, Molly Ashton, Isabelle Williams and Georgia Allen.
