ENTERPRISE EVENT

On Wednesday and Thursday, November 9 and 10, Year 12 students were off timetable in order to take part in an Enterprise activity.

On Wednesday, the students attended a carousel of workshops about setting up and running a business, and organised themselves into groups to set up a business project.

On Thursday, after initial group preparation, they had to present their ideas to a group of 'dragons', which consisted of Mrs. Jones (assistant head), Mr. Dessent (head of Sixth Form), Mr. Hill (head of business studies) and Mrs. Liz James from Careers West Wales.

There were three winning groups, whose ideas the judges felt were great and easy to achieve straightaway:

'Pembrokeshire Cards', consisting of Sam Butler, David Webb, Nathan Newell, Callum Greer, Jack Jones and Korey Batchelor, whose idea was to make and sell greetings cards with photographs of Tenby; 'Make a Wish', consisting of Coral Head, Lauren Arthur, Grace Brindley, Polly Elston and Lily Robbins, whose idea was to make and sell personalised bracelets; and 'Aroma', consisting of Kezia Tooby, Kate Harries, Sophie James and Sophie Baker, whose idea was to set up a coffee shop in the Year 11 area.

Their projects were well planned and detailed, and the school has decided to give each group a £50 grant to start their business venture. Well done to all.

Three other groups were also judged as having very strong and creative business concepts to explore further.

They were: 'Plasticast' (Max Copley, William Mills, Morgan Roberts, Sam Hunter-Baxter, Jacob Griffiths); 'Yolo' (Hugo Wellum, Joe Dennis, Harry Palin, Jake Proctor, Jack Huggett, Maisie John); and 'YES-Youth Employment Services' (Tom Stewart-Walvin, Shanesse Nickson, Faye Hilling, Dayne Moraity, Lewys Rich, David Rowe).

All presentations were of a superb standard and the judges had a tough task deciding who the winners would be.

Many thanks to Careers West Wales and Mr. Hill who organised the event, and well done to all the students who took part enthusiastically and behaved extremely well on both days.

YR ADRAN GYMRAEG YN NANT GWRTHERYN

A number of pupils in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 recently enjoyed a weekend in North Wales with the Welsh Department. Staying in the former quarrying village 'Porth y Nant', today known as 'Nant Gwrtheyrn' - a Welsh Language and Heritage Centre - pupils had the opportunity to relax in the magical and peaceful surroundings.

Visits and activities during the weekend included a very interesting talk and tour of Hedd Wyn's house - the film of which is studied for A level; a thought-provoking visit to 'Pen y Bryn', the home of the last Prince of Wales - Llewellyn the Great and his young wife 'Siwan', the drama that is studied for A level; and a visit to St. Mary's and St. Nicholas Church, Beaumaris, where the stone tomb of The Princess Siwan of Wales is situated.

There was also fun, adventure and challenge at 'Ropeworks', free time in Bangor, bowling, painting pigs at a local pottery and an excellent firework display.

Students experienced an educational and truly enjoyable weekend.

FILM CLUB

The popcorn is to hand, the movie is ready to go and Mr. Jones is giving his pre-movie musings of a shark's thoughts (writes Josh Veal, Year 9).

A great start to the second viewing of the newly-established Film Club.

After a great launch with 'X-Men: First Class' the previous week, being watched by over 60 students, it was going to be hard to top such an enjoyable film.

Our choice was to show a hugely successful film that made millions, spawned one of the greatest film-makers of all time and could be described as creating a cult.

'Jaws' - is the chilling yet slightly warm tale of a shark which has a bounty on its head, after eating innocent victims.

The movie shows how man can go to extreme measures in order to preserve life.

Even though this was released in the 1970s, the plot kept the audience captivated by the chase and climax of the storyline and, as it was shown to us digitally re-mastered on a state-of-the-art projector and big screen, it did not feel dated.

If you want to find out more, see Mr. Jones (Art Dept) or Mr. Cunliffe (Geography Dept)

Next week's showing - 'Hey you guys'... it's a screening of 'The Goonies'.

Seren yr Hanner tymor

Congratulations to Year 7 and 8 students who have been working hard during their Welsh lessons this half term.

During assemblies this week, their achievements were celebrated with a number of students receiving awards.

The awards were given for group work, effort and achievement.
