New term: Welcome back to a new year at Greenhill School. Students returned to school on Monday after a delayed start due to the new build. Mr. Noble and staff would like to thank parents/ guardians for their co-operation and understanding.

It would have been impossible for students to return any earlier and we appreciate that this could have caused difficulties within the family. Students have returned and are impressed with their new facilities and have made a good beginning in their new academic year.

Although the school is up and running there is still a lot of work to be completed by the contractors and organising and arranging to be done by teachers and support staff before we are complete. The school looks forward to the coming year with great expectations; it is expected to be a busy year that includes the OFSTED inspection.

If you would like to visit our school to see the new facilities, there will be an Open Evening in October. Students should be bringing home a Calendar of Events within the next few days, meanwhile, if you have any queries on what is happening at school, please contact reception.

Alumni: Past students? Have you checked out our website yet - http://www.greenhill.pembrokeshire.sch.uk">www.greenhill.pembrokeshire.sch.uk and click on Alumni.

FOG: The school's parents/teacher association, Friends of Greenhill, will meet on the first Tuesday of each month. Anyone is welcome (not just parents) to come along and help. They plan to fundraise for extra items to enhance the new build, ie display cabinets for the students art and DT work so that they can be placed in the foyer for all to see and appreciate.

SOGO: Next meeting of the Supporters of Greenhill Orchestra will be January 14. If anyone would like to join this band of hard working organisers, please contact the school music department. New recycling policy: Staff and students from Greenhill School, Tenby, have been working closely together to establish a new recycling policy at Greenhill School.

Sixth form students, Environment Club members, and Miss Spratt, have worked closely to create the new policy.

The policy has now been confirmed, as 'The aim of Greenhill School is to recycle as much material as possible, in order to provide a sustainable environment for our students.' The policy has its origins in the environmental group established by Matthew Tebbutt (Year 13) and Scott Lewis, a former pupil of Greenhill, who left two years ago. These two students worked closely with Pembrokeshire County Council and staff to have an issue that they deemed as very important to be recognised.

These two enterprising students established a small scale paper recycling project in the sixth form of the school.

Miss Spratt, Mr. Nichols and Lindy Eynon met with representatives of Pembrokeshire County Council to take this a step further by creating a whole school recycling scheme. Regrettably, the resources were not available to the school from the local council. However, Tesco (Pembroke Dock) heard of their plight and have kindly donated the necessary resources to the school. The manager, Mr. Rick Lawrence, and Jo Bachelor were contacted by Miss Spratt last week, and kindly organised the donation of 200 bins to Greenhill School.

Their assistance in this scheme only serves to reinforce Tesco's commitment to their local environment, and to local community schemes. Beginning on September 17, Greenhill School will be the first secondary school in South Pembrokeshire to have an established recycling scheme of this type in operation. There will be two new bins placed in every classroom of the school, one for paper and one for plastics. Every Friday at 3 pm, each bin will be emptied into large recycling bins by students, to then be taken to be recycled. Students will receive a 'green award', which is worth 30 merits, for taking part. The scheme will add to the existing recycling of mobile 'phones and ink cartridges which has been established for three years now.

Miss Spratt will oversee this new scheme, and said: "The school is very grateful to Tesco for helping me out. Without their generosity, this scheme would surely never have happened."
