TENNIS

Welsh Schools' Tennis Championships. On Monday this week, Craig Guymer, Luke Guymer, Nicky Cope and Mo Sofan played Bassaleg School, Newport, in the semi-finals of the Under 13s and Under 14s Welsh Schools Tennis Championships in the National Tennis Centre, Cardiff Bay. After some tough competition along the way, a difficult encounter was anticipated at this late stage, and the boys were not disappointed. After a sprightly start, Luke Guymer took an initial lead against the Welsh no.3 seed with an upset on the cards, but unfortunately failed to capitalise on his early success, losing 6-4 in what can only be described as an awesome performance.

Nicky Cope, Craig Guymer and Mo Sofan also encountered high quality opposition and responded extremely positively to this very high standard of tennis. The singles games proved unsuccessful, with four losses out of four, thus providing a victory for Bassaleg School.

It is well worth noting, however, that the four Bassaleg players won this competition as Year 7 players last year and the task was certainly demanding.

Present in the audience was the secretary of the Welsh Schools' Tennis Association who was very impressed at the talent shown by Greenhill's players, considering that their tennis practise is gained by playing at school and not from being club members receiving private club coaching, which was the case with the Bassaleg players.

Mr. Davies would like to thank the boys for all their efforts through their campaign, proving that tennis at Greenhill, is extremely strong with these talented players showing what is at the top level and that there's plenty of talent of all ages, boys and girls.

Shown in the picture are: Craig and Luke and Nicky Cope, with Mo Sofan missing.

FOOTBALL

Last Friday, Ysgol Greenhill School played football away at Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest.

Year 7's team fielded 23 players in total from both the A and B team, with an initial 11 swopping for another 11 at half-time. Losing 4-0 at the interval, the fresh team did extremely well to hit the net three times to bring the final score of 4-3 to Sir Thomas Picton.

Year 9 produced a fantastic performance and deserved their 4-2 win.

In the Welsh Schools Cup, our Year 7 football team played against Burry Port last Tuesday, October 9. An excellent performance by Ysgol Greenhill School.

RUGBY

Our Year 10 rugby team also took to the field against Burry Port on October 9. The game was refereed by our very own Mr. Bartlett, who commented that Burry Port's team was one of the best Year 10 sides that he had ever seen, which goes, in part, to explain our 51-0 defeat. Better luck next time!

On Wednesday, October 10, we also played at home against Milford Haven School. Our Year 8 team won 62-10 in a game which saw outstanding performance by all. Year 9 drew 12-12, and our Second XV won their game 36-5. Congratulations.

Pembrokeshire Secondary Schools Rugby Union celebrate today (Friday) in a special 50th anniversary match at Tenby RFC's Heywood Lane field with Pembrokeshire Schools playing Cornwall Schools. The Pembrokeshire Schools team will consist of the county's best senior school players, playing against one of England's strongest sporting counties.

Representing Ysgol Greenhill School are: Gareth Edwards, Rhydian Rees, Kevin Bratcher, David Barnes and Nicky Guymer. We wish all the players well!

Kick-off is at 4.30 pm, and there is no entry fee, so if you are able to come along and support the Pembrokeshire Schools players please do. It promises to be a thrilling game.

NETBALL

Last week's netball games against Pembroke were cancelled due to bad weather and will now be played on Tuesday, October 30, whilst this week's games against Netherwood School were also unfortunately cancelled.

On Wednesday night, October 17, however, two Year 8 teams playsed netball, and our Year 9 and Year 10 teams played hockey against Carmarthen's Queen Elizabeth Cambria School. Results to follow in the next Newyddion Greenhill News.

Yesterday (Thursday) our Year 8, 9 and Under 18s teams were due to play Ysgol-Y-Preseli, Crymych, in hockey. Again, results will follow.

FIXTURES

On Wednesday, October 31, girls from the county's netball team will take part in trials for the West Wales Netball Team in Aberystwyth. We wish our county players the best of luck.

The Under 18s Hockey Tournament takes place at Pembroke on Thursday, November 1. Good luck Greenhill!

Also, in the first week of the next half-term we should also be playing netball and hockey against Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest. Dates and times to be arranged.

CROSS COUNTRY

On Tuesday night, October 16, both our cross-country runners (both boys and girls) took part in the Cross Country Championships in Milford Haven. Results to follow.

The afternoon was a great success, with the students gaining experience from Euros Lewis and a trainer from Dawns Dyfed.

Parents evening

A Year 11 parents evening will be held on Thursday, November 1, between 4 and 6.30 pm. Parents are urged to take this opportunity to discuss their children's progress at this crucial stage in their GCSE courses. The usual appointment system will be in operation. We look forward to seeing you!

Creative Arts

Reminder as per the school calendar that 'Supporters of Greenhill Orchestra' (SOGO) will hold their second meeting of the year on Tuesday, October 30, at 7 pm, in room 504 in the Music Department. All interested people, with or without any ideas, are very welcome indeed. See you there!

Book Fair

Brand-new books from Scholastic were for sale in school last week during the annual Book Fair. There were books to suit all tastes and interests, and were greeted with enthusiasm by our students. Because of the total amount of books sold, a number of books were donated to the library, boosting its stock of contemporary fiction. The Book Fair was a great success, due in part to the student volunteers in Year 12 who kindly gave up some of their lunch-breaks to help. Hopefully, another Book Fair will be organised next year.

Book Quiz

The winner of the recent Library Book Quiz to celebrate National Children's Book Week is Fiona Mackenzie who gained top marks in answering all questions correctly. Fiona won a delicious prize for her excellent work.

Here are the answers to some of the questions. The author of 'Bad Girls' is Jacqueline Wilson, BFG is the abbreviation for 'Big Friendly Giant,' and the title of the final Philip Pullman 'His Dark Materials' trilogy is 'The Amber Spyglass.'
