How do you cut a carrot? How do you make a 'hedgehog' from a mango? What is couscous? How sharp is the knife? Just a few of the questions asked by some of the 150 pupils who had heard about their chance to attend sessions on  cooking and healthy eating sessions recently.  The questions were expertly answered when The Cooking Bus came to town in Pembroke recently. As a part of a project delivered by Health Challenge Wales and Public Health Wales to teach primary school children how and what to cook, the Cooking Bus came to Golden Grove School-Ysgol Gelli Aur. Locals and visitors to the town would have seen it parked, not at the school, on the car park at The Commons. The presence of the vehicle attracted some local interest with several ad hoc visitors calling to see what exactly was going on. The 150 pupils attending the sessions delivered by experts in  teaching cooking skills became immersed in a journey taking them from kitchen skills, knife skills and  food preparation skills to turning out mouth watering dishes of couscous salad, exotic fruit salad, pizzas,  kebabs and more under the watchful eyes of Richard and Jane, the teachers delivering the learning for the pupils. As well as the cooking and knife skills, the pupils were given an insight of what is required to work in a professional kitchen. Footwear, mode of dress and personal hygiene were high on the agenda. Moving to the food, the pupils were given essential information of the value of a well balanced diet with an emphasis on producing a delicious meal at a low cost.  The saying 'the proof of the pudding is in the eating'  was well borne out with delighted  pupils taking away containers of food that  they had, in teams, produced. There was some 'trading' of favoured dishes after all the pupils had tasted the results of their endeavours. Headteacher Mr. Les Johnson attended some of the sessions being delivered and was tempted in to tasting some of the results of the hard work by by all concerned. He said: "The Cooking Bus has been a great success, the pupils and staff very much enjoyed the sessions delivered by Richard and Jane. The school will be providing follow up sessions as a part of our out of school activities provision. Pupils will benefit from the Cooking Bus sessions in both the short and longer term."
