The Lawrenny and Martletwy WI recently presented Jeffreyston Junior School with a new award as part of its Pathway to the 21st Century Scheme.
Aimed at recognising meritorious achievement in the community, the WI chose education and invited headteacher Mrs. Sue Crawley to nominate a subject or activity for the annual award.
Because of the school's strong interest in music, the award will go to the pupil judged to have made the best progress during the year in playing a musical instrument.
The winner of the inaugural award is eight-year-old Megan Jenkins, who plays the trumpet.
Megan, pictured with Mrs. Jean Mathias, president, Mrs. Sue Jenkins, secretary, Lawrenny/Martletwy WI, and headteacher Mrs. Sue Crawley, is one of 15 instrumentalists in the school.
Headteacher Mrs. Crawley said: "Music plays a very important part in our curriculum and after-school activity."
Competing recently in the Texaco Music Festival for the first time, the school's performance was well received and was followed by the school's end of term production of the musical Oliver.
