New toll booths are due to open soon on the Cleddau Bridge. For the first time in its 30-year life, the structure will be fitted with a barrier system. The four booths have been designed to provide better and safer working conditions for the toll operators. Work on the booths has been carried out concurrently with the resurfacing of the bridge as part of an overall enhancement and maintenance programme. The project involved removing the existing, outdated booths, reconstructing the booth islands and installing new booths and barriers. Reinforced concrete foundations have also been constructed to enable a canopy to be erected over the booths at a later date. During the work, extensive traffic management - including the use of temporary toll booths - was required. Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member for environment and transportation, Clr. Brian Hall, said he hoped bridge users will be patient once the booths become operational. "There could be some teething problems in the first few days, so I am asking people to be patient" he warned. "If this is the case, it will not be the fault of the toll collectors so I am asking motorists not to take their frustration out on them."
