Pembrokeshire County Council has introduced new hi-tech signs to warn of Cleddau Bridge closures due to high winds.
Remotely operated from the bridge toll office, the new signage will replace the old manually operated signs.
The signs will inform motorists of the latest information on the state of the bridge - either fully open, closed to high-sided vehicles or closed to all traffic.
Five new signs have been located close to the bridge, replacing the three previous signs, while an extra two new signs have also been placed at Carew and Haverfordwest.
Motorists - in particular drivers of high-sided vehicles - are now being targeted with leaflets informing them of the new signage and urging them to take note of their advice. Letters are also being sent out to local businesses.
As a result of new road traffic orders, drivers found contravening the new signage could face prosecution and face possible penalties.
When the bridge is closed to high-sided vehicles, the following vehicles are not permitted to cross: all vehicles over 1.9m high, wind sensitive loads on roof racks, motorcycles, bicycles and trailers. Drivers of vehicles who contravene the partial closure traffic order face a possible £60 fine and a three-point endorsement on their licence.
Under full closure, no vehicles or pedestrians are permitted to cross the bridge. Drivers crossing the bridge when the bridge is closed to all traffic face a £30 fine, but this offence is non-endorsable.
The signage is the latest investment by the council, which has carried out major work at the bridge over the last seven years, including main box strengthening, resurfacing and new toll booths and canopy.
The new signs are in addition to other methods of determining bridge closure status. These include logging on to http://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/bridge">www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk/bridge or http://www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk">www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk. Alternatively, motorists can find out the status of the bridge by texting the word BRIDGE to 80039. Texts will be charged at standard network rates.
