Narberth Classic Motorcycle Club hosted the third round of the Welsh Classic Sidecar Championship on a totally new track at West Atheston Farm, Narberth, last Sunday. The new track was quite technical and incorporated some new climbs and drops in a wooded area. Although it was a fast track and the sidecars found overtaking difficult, it made for some very close but fast racing. The three sidecar championship races were all won by Worcestershire man Paul Harker and passenger Derrick Bodfish from Narberth, maintaining their 100 per cent record of wins - even winning the last race with a flat sidecar tyre. Second place went to Phill Boote and Ian Coulter from Stoke-on-Trent who had two good seconds and a third. Third place went to father and daughter crew Steve and Rowena Long from Witney in Oxfordshire. The sidecar series, into its third round, has proven popular, with over 20 sidecar crews signing up from all over the country, from as far afield as Manchester, Reading, Devon and Wiltshire, and three local crews from the Narberth area. The solo races, which were not part of the Welsh Championship, saw some excellent close racing between two of the fastest classic riders in the UK, namely Terry Challinor from Shrewsbury and Tim Manton from Tamworth in the pre 1965 class. There was never more than a few yards between them throughout all three races and they finished in that order, with Welshman Vincent Price, on a superb looking Velocette engined Mettisse, in third place. Narberth clubmen produced some very respectable results in many of the other races, namely Gary Richards had first place in the pre 60 race, Roy Thomas had second and Tony Ditcher had third in the pre 68, Tony Macklen had third and Tim Bodfish fourth in pre 65 up to 350cc. After the main three blocks of racing, a series of age-related races and a sidecar handicap race were run, in which Narberth clubmen again featured well, with Bryan Bodfish and grandson Matthew as passenger just holding second place by half a machine's length from Ludchurch residents Bob Buck and Dylan Roach in the chair, the race being won by Phill Boote and Ian Coulter, who started nearly a minute in arrears, but managed to pull through to lead everyone on the fourth lap out of six. Many thanks go to all the marshals, St. Johns Ambulance and officials, who endured the hot sun, and all the competitors, who all agreed that the new track was excellent. The next event in the Welsh Championship is at Wrexham this Sunday, followed by Cardigan club at Llechryd on July 31, both events being solo and sidecar championship rounds. The next Narberth event is on August 22, again at West Atheston. Narberth Classic MCC meet on the first Monday evening of the month at Narberth RFC. New members, riders, marshals or helpers welcome.
