The Lord's Prayer says Thy will be done. Today My will be done is the more popular choice! In a world where pleasing ourselves is encouraged, how can we be sure that we are following God?
God gives us his Holy Spirit to guide us. In the Bible Phillip was given specific instructions by an angel of the Lord: "Go south down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza." Philip listened, obeyed; meeting an Ethiopian man reading scripture out loud, who wanted to know the meaning. Philip was in the right place at the right time.
Sometimes the Holy Spirit stops us in our tracks, sending us another way: 'Paul and Silas travelled through the area of Phrygia and Galatia, because the Holy Spirit had prevented them from preaching the word in the province of Asia at that time... they headed north for the province of Bithynia, but again the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to go there... instead, they went on through Mysia to the seaport of Troas'. (Acts 16 -The Bible)
Sometimes God wants us to act, other times God wants to stop us; even halting good works. As Paul and Silas were prevented from telling people about Jesus in those regions, at that time, their obedience brought the good news elsewhere. Soon after Paul had a vision of a man from Macedonia, northern Greece, pleading with him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us!" They left for Macedonia at once, believing God was calling them to preach the Good News in Europe.
If you feel moved to try something, but the door is closed, pray about it, see if this is the right way. God may have other things in mind. Sometimes we have to wait, which is hard. Then we can: 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.' (Proverbs)
We may know what we want, but if we want to be faithful in following Jesus, we need to think more Thy will be done and less of the My will be done; waiting for God to show us His way.
