Caldey Island's new ambulance gift was finally delivered last Friday morning, with the Abbot full of praise for the services involved in providing the emergency vehicle. St. John Ambulance service in Pembroke Dock stepped in to help out their colleagues at Tenby station to donate the ambulance for use on the island. The donation follows an incident last November when one of Caldey's monks, Brother Dominic, required medical treatment after sustaining a broken hip when he fell in the island's woods. "Many people may query why an ambulance service on Caldey is such an important matter, as the island has no hospital," commented the Abbot, Father Daniel. "The answer is short and simple; we need to be able to carry any casualties safely and professionally to the lifeboat or helicopter, which in turn will take them to the mainland hospital, especially during the busy tourist season. "On behalf of all the brothers and the island community, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Tenby Ambulance Service and especially to St. John Ambulance Service at Pembroke Dock. I have no doubt that the new precious vehicle will do a great service in the years to come," added Father Daniel.
