Narberth U3A
Another busy week for Narberth U3A (writes Dave Dando).
One of the reading groups discussed 'The Camel Bookmobile' by Masha Hamilton.
An American woman librarian takes books (some written in English) to a tribe in Kenya by camel. She wanted to make a difference to their lives, but readers were left with the question of who was helping who?
The tribe were in fact a group of interesting and diverse individuals whose existence depended on where to find water.
The introduction of the books caused friction in the community and posed the question how far you can impose your ideals on others.
Well intentioned actions believing you know what is best for others can be naive.
The people of the village had a close relationship with the land not understood by others wishing for a little adventure.
In the history group, Phil Mahiques finished off Cromwell, which some have been trying to do for years, including digging up his body to punish him when dead. Was he a hero who made the country great, upholding parliamentary rights by removing a bad king and abolishing the House of Lords, or could he have been just a ruthless Puritan who could not tolerate any dissenting voice and whose actions in Ireland raised issues of war crimes? The issue was not solved and for some never will be.
The walkers enjoyed the fresh air tramping the path from Abereiddy to Porthgain, while those who had recently taken up bridge continued to make great progress in the finer points.
The Mah Jongg Group remain grimly determined to succeed. Furrowed brows and gales of laughter were much in evidence as they attempted to remember forgotten rules and grasp elementary Mandarin.

NARBERTH BAPTIST FELLOWSHIP
Some of us lived before the age of mobile phones and the internet when life was simple. In those days you would telephone a company and a person would answer the 'phone and you would speak to them. Life was simple. Now you get to speak to automated robotic voices who give you numbers to press, and you wait endlessly for a friendly voice, only to find you are blasted with music you dislike whilst you hold endlessly whilst being charged a premium rate for the call!
We are now entering the Christian season of Lent. One of the themes of Lent is simplicity, but for many of us, the world seems to be getting far more complex. Lent is a time to get back to the basics of our faith - to loving God and each other and to pray for our world and ourselves. Prayer can change hearts and minds and allows God to work through each and every one of us. Prayer provides us all with a protection against temptations and evil and leaves us open to the grace of God.
This simple saying sums up a heart at peace and how that one heart can touch the hearts of others:
'If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character.
If there is beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home.
If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation.
If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.' (Confucius).
