Staff and volunteers at Narberth Museum were saddened to learn of the death of trustee John Mathias.

John had been a Trustee of the Museum since he returned to Pembrokeshire following his retirement in 2001.

“He played a significant role in the nine-year project to restore the Bonded Stores as a new home for the museum’s collection and he continued to support our work for many years,” said curator of Narberth Museum, Pauline Griffiths.

“He was a conscientious, loyal and generous Trustee, attending all our events and even opening up his garden in Princes Gate for fundraising teas.

“He had strong Pembrokeshire roots. His grandfather, Jack Thomas, had been a porter at Narberth station and later Station Master at Saundersfoot.

“The silver tea service presented to him on his retirement along with other memorabilia can be seen displayed in the Museum, generously donated by John and his cousin.

“John's contribution to the work of the Museum was much valued and we send our sincere condolences to his family,” she added.
