Traders in Narberth could face business rate increases next year, it has been revealed this week. The town's County Councillor, Wynne Evans, has expressed concerns about possible rises from next year for many of the town's traders. "For a number of years, Narberth had benefited from the rural rate relief scheme, which in my opinion has certainly helped small traders in town start their own business and add to the vibrancy of the town," said Clr. Evans. "However, new changes may come into force as from April 2007," he continued. "Although it is still under consultation by the Welsh Assembly Government, new measures could put serious pressure on less established businesses in the town," he explained. Clr. Evans feels that one of the major factors that needs to be taken into account is that Narberth is rapidly growing in size and population, and once the population exceeds the 3,000 mark, then the town will not be classed as a rural designated area. "In my opinion, there will be winners, but mainly losers," said Clr. Evans.

"Welsh Assembly Minister Sue Essex has made a statement outlining the proposals, some of which concern me, and I hope to meet with Chamber of Trade members shortly as the closing date for responses to the Assembly is October 27," Clr. Evans concluded.
