It was Colonel Gilbertson who gallantly rode to the rescue when Sid Evans, the Port Reeve of Laugharne, was ensconced in hospital on the March 29 meeting of Narberth Probus Club. Richard Gilbertson entertained the members with stirring tales of his life as a soldier in India and Southern Arabia, relating stories that could have come from the pages of Boys Own paper. Richard, who lives at Lampeter Velfrey and is a well-known rose grower, has lived a most adventurous life and when he retired he turned the many letters he had sent to his mother into a story of his military life, illustrating the prose with slides of his journeys. Walking in the Himalayas or keeping the peace between the tribes of Southern Arabia was all in the day's work for Richard. The president, John Gibbin, thanked Richard for a most enthralling talk, calling upon Geoff Evans, the club's resident rocket scientist, to propose a vote of thanks. Geoff said that it was always a pleasure to hear the colonel speak and thanked him for a tale well told and for his rescue of the club's speaker programme. The president reminded members of the Ladies Lunch to be held at the Nantyffin Motel on April 26, 12 noon for 12.30 pm, when the speaker would be John Evans with reminiscences of a schoolmaster.
