The Arts Club Christmas entertainment last Friday evening was 'Music and Mummers', produced by Mary Smith and Valerie Cochlin. The musical items were arranged and accompanied by Dr. John Harrison, with Peggy Cole and Jack Docherty as soloists. The evening's programme began with a group of four carols, some old, some more modern, beautifully performed by the two soloists and setting the scene for what was to come. So far so good! The next item was act one of the Bampton Mummers' Play where each part was taken by a member of the Arts Club, apart from one guest star. Father Christmas appeared on stage, closely followed by St. George and a Turkish knight, brandishing swords quite dangerously, and indeed Dr. Good was sent for to repair the damage! Respite was required at this point and was provided by the singers with three more carols. The second act by the Mummers introduced several more forceful characters, with Little John receiving great applause and encouragement as the only female in a group of somewhat belligerent males who vied with each other to have their say. The rest was mayhem and the result hilarious, with Father Christmas left in no condition to perform his traditional duties! Following enthusiastic and prolonged applause for the thespians, Dr. Harrison and the singers brought calm and order once more with three well-loved carols to close the entertainment part of the evening. All then adjourned for well-deserved refreshments, the consensus of opinion being that it had been a great success. The Arts Club resumes on January 14, after the Christmas break. A happy Christmas to everyone!
