Local MP Nick Ainger has welcomed npower's announcement that they have agreed a deal with Alstom to be the main contractor to build the 2000 MW gas fired power station at Pembroke. Construction could start in 2008 when the consent process is completed and a final go-ahead is given by the npower board. Speaking from his Pembroke Dock office, Mr. Ainger said: "This £800 million investment will be another boost to Pembrokeshire's economy and the wider environment. "Around 100 permanent jobs will be created after the construction period and the power station should pump up to £10 million a year into the local economy, through wages and contracts with local service companies. "The gas-fired station, using natural gas from the new Milford Haven LNG terminals, will mean a massive reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the UK electricity industry. It will replace out of date coal fired stations which produce high levels of CO2. When running, it could cut up to 10 million tonnes of CO2 a year for the same amount of power generated. That must be a good deal for the environment and will be a major contribution to tackling global warming."
