The sky's the limit for pupils at Pembroke School, thanks to a new after-school climbing club.

The 5x60 Rock Monkeys Club aims to teach pupils all the necessary skills to ensure that they can use a bottom rope system in climbing in a safe environment, with a qualified and experienced instructor.

Club members use a new indoor rock climbing wall at Pembroke Leisure Centre sports hall, which was built last year.

The seven-week course was set up by Wyndham Williams, 5x60 school sport co-ordinator at Pembrokeshire County Council.

He said rock climbing has huge physical benefits, as well as being great fun.

"Climbing is challenging and taking on the challenge can be very rewarding. Working up a good sweat, having fun with your friends, or finishing that route you've been working on for weeks is satisfying," said Wyndham.

"Regular participants can also develop dynamic muscle strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and mental and physical focus."

The course will be progressed and structured to ensure that pupils reach all of their targets required to gain a NICAS award (National Indoor Climbing Wall Accreditation Scheme).

After the programme, the students will undertake a small assessment to ascertain their safe use of the climbing wall and when successfully completed they will be presented with the NICAS award.

NICAS is designed to introduce new and young climbers to climbing on artificial walls using a series of five awards of increasing technical skill.

Clr. Rob Lewis, cabinet member for cultural services, Sports, leisure and tourism, welcomed the new club, saying: "This is a valuable resource for the pupils of Pembroke School, enabling them, through climbing, to develop confidence, self-esteem and trust - trusting other people around you as well as the instructors."
