Sir, I read the letter in this week's Observer from Bob Lowe concerning the speeding along Park Road and I write to say that I totally agree with his comments. It is only by the grace of God that there are not more accidents and deaths. Park Road is a very narrow road with a narrow pavement and the speed that some vehicles travel down it is beyond belief. One suggestion I would make is to site a speed camera above the bridge, another possible remedy would be traffic calming - sleeping policemen. A certain section of the community treats Park Road as a race track - day and night. In my opinion, perhaps another body should 'police' the traffic problems of Tenby. Possibly the Pembrokeshire County Council should employ several dedicated staff for this job, as the police seem to either not have enough time or resources to police this section of society properly. At present, I believe the speeding and parking fixed penalty tickets are £30 each. When I have walked around this area or around the town for just 30 minutes, usually I see at least 20 foulings of the law. At £30 a time, that would raise £600 for just 30 minutes work! Imagine how much revenue would be earned with just one full-time dedicated officer operating a zero tolerance approach. Also how much safer our streets would be! Perhaps the revenue earned could be utilised for the benefit of Tenby generally. The areas that desperately need attention are:- (i) Vehicles speeding down Park Road - some with music blaring and horns tooting - very often at two, three or four o'clock in the morning. (ii) Pedestrians walking down Park Road on their way home from the pub or club in the early hours of the morning shouting and screaming. Very often these people are also very drunk. They should remember that the majority of people are in bed and trying to sleep. (iii) I have witnessed cars driving the wrong way along Edward Street and Park Place, sometimes as many as five or six vehicles a day. I have also seen cars driving the wrong way up Upper Park Road. The consequences could be disastrous. (iv) Cars parked in permit areas that do not have a permit. (v) Cars parked on double yellow lines, 'dropped kerbs' and pavements. (vi) Cars and vans parked in the bus bays outside Somerfield causing buses to pick up passengers in the middle of the road - very dangerous. It seems to me that motorists in Tenby have a free hand and do what they like! Something desperately needs to be done and quick. When a person takes a driving test they have to know the speed limit regulations, similarly they have to know the meaning of yellow lines and parking regulations. There is no excuse - they know the law - so with the speeding and parking regulations rigidly enforced on a zero tolerance basis, life for the majority of us citizens who are law abiding, will improve greatly and those who blatantly and constantly break the regulations will have a much lighter bank balance!
