Keeping karate in the family, Sharon and Conor Lloyd, mother and son from Tenby, attended their latest karate grading in Llandeilo on Friday. Sharon passed her 7th Kyu grade (yellow belt) and Conor gained 3rd Kyu (brown belt).
Both mother and son have been training regularly together for nearly two years now and are members of Sochin Shotokan Karate Club, run by Sensei James Masterman.
The course and grading was held at the Civic Hall in Llandeilo and was conducted by Sensei Chico Mbakwe 7th Dan, chief instructor of the Welsh Shotokan Karate Union, and one of the most experienced and respected karate instructors in Wales.
Conor, aged 10, is the club's longest standing student and has been training hard and enthusiastically since he first joined the club at the age of eight. By early next year, he hopes to gain his black belt, which will probably make him the youngest Shotokan karate black belt in Pembrokeshire - so watch this space!
Llandeilo is one of three clubs run by James Masterman, the others being at Penally Village Hall, Tuesdays, 7-8.30 pm, and Pater Hall, Pembroke Dock, Sundays, 10-11 am. The clubs welcome beginners and advanced students alike and anyone interested is encouraged to go along and give karate a go, your first lesson is free!
