Pembroke Dock Karate Club hosted the ninth West Wales Wadoryu Karate Association summer camp.

The event was organised by Sensei Graham Thomas 6th Dan, with the support of Sensei Martin Morgan 3rd Dan, Sensei Tony D'Arcy 1st Dan and Iian Thomas 1st Dan.

Students took part in the four-day event, which covered all aspects of the Wadoryu, this year with the emphasis on kata (form) fitness, Kata Bunkai (application of Kata), Impact Training (Strike Dummy, Shields and Focus Pads).

After the training was complete, it was time for kyu (coloured belt) and black belt grading.

In all honesty, it was very challenging and exhausting, the black belt grading especially, and after completing their grading they had several rounds of stamina and bag work to undertake.

Finally, onto the competitions. Students as young as five years took part in kata (form) freestyle kata (this is where the student makes up his or her own kata and gives it a name).

This gave the students the opportunity to think for themselves, create, research using books, internet and practising at home on their own, and with the involvement of their parents.

Next discipline was the strike dummy. This is where students compete against each other to see who can strike the target with the most correct karate techniques in one minute.

Agility came next, with students using jump ladders, jumps, hoops, and tunnels, stand-alone strike dummies etc. Severity increased as the student got older.
