Tenby AFC's annual Spring Sevens football tournament, awaited the Tenby Under 8s last Saturday. The boys had not played a competitive match for many weeks, but did not disappoint. Their group consisted of Prendergast Villa, Hakin and Cwrt Rawlins. Tenby convincingly won their first match against Prendergast Villa by a margin of 5-0, with goals coming from Don 2, Toby 2 and one from Ben. Again they won their second match against Hakin 2-0, with Toby scoring both. The third match against Cwrt Rawlins (who had some very big boys!) was lost and the boys seemed very deflated with the result. However, they went through to the semi-finals and drew Clarbeston Road, a match which they won 2-0 thanks to the ever-faithful boot of Toby Poole. The final was against Cwrt Rawlins, with the Tenby boys knowing that they had already been beaten by them once, but they were determined not to let it happen again and took to the field with their heads held high, knowing that they had a job to do. The first half saw Cwrt Rawlins go 2-0 up, but in the second half Toby scored to give the Tenby side a lift. After that they were full of determination, relishing the challenge to stay in the game. However, it wasn't to be and they eventually lost 2 -1. The boys should be proud; they consistently worked together as a team, showing true courage and determination throughout the day in every match they played. They walked away with a fabulous trophy, perhaps not the one they wanted, but a well deserved trophy which they should be extremely proud of. On Sunday they were at it again with a tournament at Lamphey. What was this day going to hold? The boys were determined that the trophy was going to be there's. Their group consisted of Lamphey, Camrose, Monkton and Clarbeston Road. Tenby proved to be well up for it, winning all four matches, with scorers being, against Lamphey (Don 2, Ryan 2), Camrose (Toby 2), Monkton (Tom 1, Toby 3) and Clarbeston Road (Toby). Tenby met Camrose in the semi-final, a team they had already beaten one hour previously. Whether this was to their disadvantage will never be known, but Camrose went 4-1 up against a very dejected Tenby side. Somehow the boys managed to get the score back to 4-3, but another goal from Camrose just took the wind out of their sails, with the score being 5-3 at the final whistle. Everyone, including the parents on the sideline, just couldn't quite get to grips with this defeat and it showed as the players left the field. They faced Monkton in the play-off to determine third and fourth places and after all the hard work the Tenby team had already done in the previous games, they weren't going to lose this one. A small consolation, third place, but with the help of Ryan scoring two, including a great header, and Toby one, the boys picked up another medallion to add to their collection. There were mixed feelings throughout the camp, but all the parents who were there said what a pleasure the weekend had been, watching the determination and team work these boys play with. Stand proud! A big thank you goes to Matthew Broadhurst, a truly committed coach, to all the mums and dads and supporters, and to all the boys in Tenby U8s. Well done!
