Pembrokeshire Under 11s Schools' sides played in the second round of the HSBC Yeoman Shield last Sunday at Aberystwyth. Both sides met South Ceredigion in their first match. The A side took a while to settle, with Jack Murphy, Thomas Grimwood, Niall Kinsella and Rhys Jenkins all making their debuts for the schools' side. The team showed some good inter-passing between Martyn Carroll and Elliot Goldsmith and strong running up front by Liam Davies. One lapse in marking led to South Ceredigion's goal and, despite some desperate shooting, Pembs. could not find the back of the net. The B side won 1-0, with Josh Hicks scoring a superb volley. The team played well, with Liam Fawcett and Adam Richards defending strongly. Toby Rossiter had a very good debut and Dan Edwards once again showed good control in the midfield. Dan Fairlie also made his debut playing up front and 'keeper Billy Woods kept a clean sheet in his first ever match for the side. The aggregated score meant Pembs. drew 1-1 and they picked up their only point. The second set of matches was against North Ceredigion. The A side drew 0-0 in a hard fought game. Rhys Clutterbuck worked hard on the right flank and Thomas Grimwood showed some skilful touches. Rhys Jenkins and Niall Kinsella tackled and chased well, while Jack Murphy won many balls in the air. Pembs. had several chances to score, but luck was against them. The B side conceded a goal early on, then pressed hard to get the equaliser. Liam Maggs and Joel Morgan forced several corners, which the side were unable to convert. Hugo Wellum and Josh Hicks combined well and Pembs. had several shots, but the North Ceredigion 'keeper played well and kept his side ahead. Their final set of matches was against Swansea. Pembs. boys were determined to play well and that just what they did. The A side took the game to Swansea. Rory Silence looked safe in goal, while Elliot Goldsmith and Aaron Johnson defended superbly. Pembs had most of the possession and went close to scoring on several occasions. The Pembs side were stunned when a well hit low drive, that looked like it was going wide, hit the post and spun into the net. Despite their best efforts to get back in the game, Pembs. ran out of time. 1-0 to Swansea. The B side played extremely well and kept the Swansea side (that had beaten them 3-0 in the previous tournament), at bay. Both teams wanted to win and it was end to end stuff. Joel Morgan had some good runs, worrying the Swansea defence, and Billy Woods pulled off a great save in the dying minutes to deny Swansea a victory. 0-0 draw. Despite only picking up one point this round, both sides can be pleased with the football they played and to continue this in the next round on February 5, which is due to be played in Pembrokeshire.
