A county councillor has mixed feelings after the go-ahead was given for the redevelopment of a prominent landmark in the resort.
Clr. Michael Williams, who is a member of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, was in favour of the authority's decision to allow full residential use of the proposed scheme at the Fountains Cafe, but has reservations concerning a proviso attached to the consent.
Permission for the project was granted subject to five affordable housing units being provided off-site, with a condition that these would be for local people.
The development will see 19 apartments, plus retail and cafe facilities, in two three-storey buildings.
"My comments at the meeting were in support of the officer recommendation that the affordable element of the development should be on-site," said County Clr. Williams.
"The developer offered to provide the affordable element off-site, which I presume entails purchasing properties which could already fall into the affordable category."
He continued: "My concerns are that in doing this they will not be providing any new affordable properties; further, to ensure what they are offering comes to fruition, will mean them entering into a legal agreement with the planning authority.
"I think we all know that this route could very well result in only the legal profession gaining."
Clr. Williams added: "Having said this, it is good to think that this site will at last be developed on what has for years been one of the main eyesores in Tenby.
"The design is innovative, with two curved sections, offering both residential and retail opportunities."
