On Friday evening, Llaeth Cymreig Cyfyngedig (Welsh Milk Limited) held its annual dinner, which was well attended by members, friends and staff. The evening was a very enjoyable occasion and the meal served by the Emlyn Arms was superb.

Two cups were presented to producers achieving high performance during the year.

For achieving an average low bactoscan, R. and J. Evans, of Synod Uchaf, won a trophy donated by Mr. and Mrs. Trevor Routley, of Fferm Fach, while for achieving the lowest average cell count, R. and G. Jones, of Blaencwmer-nydd, won a trophy donated by Mr. and Mrs. Huw Jones, of Penlanymor.

The presentations were followed by some humorous speeches and a serious discussion on the way forward.

It was reported that the milk round started four months ago and was going well and expanding. During the past few months seven new members had enrolled to supply milk to the company, with several more applying to join.

Plans for installing the bottling plant were in an advanced stage and hopefully production would start within the next few months.

Members were very concerned of the talk of a glut of milk on the market and producers having to sell their milk at below cost of production. They felt that this glut was manipulated by the trade at the expense of the producer. With milk quotas only allowing the UK to be 83 per cent self-sufficient there could not be too much milk on the home market.

Members felt very strongly that it was vital to control the processing and marketing of their own milk and they were happy that this was the way that they were proceeding in Llaeth Cymreig.

The meeting was informed that Mr. Ian Potter had agreed to address an open meeting at the Emlyn Arms, Newcastle Emlyn, on Monday, February 24, at 7.30 pm.
