Narberth Karate Club recently hosted the Welsh Higashi Karate Kai National Closed Championships at the Bloomfield Centre, Narberth. The tournament was very well attended, attracting competitors from all the clubs within the WHKK and resulting in a very high standard of competition, with students from the Narberth club featuring strongly in the medal positions. Brother and sister, Mike and Shannon Evans both won gold medals in their respective Kata (Form) categories. Shannon went on to win a further gold in the Team Kata event, with Mike gaining silver in the strongly contested Kumite (Fighting), whilst fellow club member Ross Mayes took the bronze medal in the same category. Luke Wise acquitted himself well in his debut competition in the Senior Men's Kumite by winning his first fight and losing narrowly to the eventual runner-up in that category. Inspired by this success, the Narberth students subsequently competed well at the North Wales Open National Karate Championships in Wrexham. This time, Mike and Shannon Evans found themselves competing against each other in a very large Kata event, both winning through to a unique brother and sister final, where Mike took the gold medal and Shannon the silver. Once again Ross Mayes's performance underscored the strength and determination of the Narberth contingent by obtaining the bronze medal in his Kumite category. All students are now training hard for the Welsh National Junior Championships due to be held in Cardiff in August. Narberth Karate Club will be taking a short summer break, but will reconvene on September 10. Sessions are held in the Bloomfield Centre, Narberth, every Monday, 7-9 pm, and Friday, 7- 8.30 pm.
