Mayor of Tenby, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane ‘became blind’ on Tuesday morning to highlight the Lions Club’s International Sight Awareness Week.

In 1925, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become ‘knights of the blind.’ Since then, Lions Clubs globally have been the forerunners in the prevention of Blindness and the Restoration of Sight in the Developing world.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) Sightfirst Programme is the world’s largest blind prevention programme. So far the mission has prevented or restored serious vision loss to over 30,000,000 people, it has supported 148 million treatments for river blindness, restored sight to over 8,000,000 people with cataracts and built or expanded 315 eye hospitals and clinics.

The use of the white cane for the blind was started by the Lions in 1931. This has since been universally recognised as a symbol for the blind.

Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane was safely guided around Tenby by Lions Robert Mayhew, Nick Stapleton and Peter Roderick.

Tenby and District Lions Club are extremely grateful to the Mayor for participating in Lions Sight Awareness Week which is being celebrated nationally and internationally.
