Of all the foursomes mixed competitions played at Tenby, the Mathias Thomas event has to be the most difficult, as it is the only medal played.
Unlike stableford competitions where you can have one bad hole and move on, in this format you have to keep playing, and keep scoring!
So credit to the competitors on Bank Holiday Monday, there were no 'no-returns'.
Thankfully the weather was perfect, but the course was ready to punish any wayward shots.
Mervyn Tucker kindly gave a brief history of Byam Mathias Thomas and his family before the prizes were announced, and then helped the ladies' captain, Heather K. Morgan, to present the prizes.
There were no 'twos', so with the field being so small, two bag draw prizes were given. These were won by Rosina and Paul Jenkins, and Laura McQueen and Jim Moffat.
Steve and Pam Cole were just beaten out of the prizes by Sue Griffiths and John Hancock, who, playing off handicaps of 12 and six, had a gross 88, net 79.
Winners were Paul and Rosina Jenkins, playing off eight and 22. They had a gross 89, net 74. Since no-one had signed up with them, they were very grateful to Andrew Morton who valiantly went out to mark their card, even though he had already played with his brother earlier in the day.
A very pleasant afternoon ended with a lovely meal in the clubhouse, and everyone was reminded that the next 'mixed' is the Sam Ackerman Trophy, which will have a draw for partners and be off the white boxes, on Friday, June 19. The good news is that it is a stableford!
The sheet to sign up is on the mixed board at the back of the clubhouse. There are always plenty of women, but we need more men to sign up.
