'MAPPING the Past' is the title of a one-day course to be held at Haverfordwest Library on Saturday, July 7.
The course, which will comprise a mixture of lectures and practical work, is intended as an introduction to the use of maps in family and local history.
Maps are useful tools in identifying where a place is and in helping to visualise the locality. They can also be very helpful in building up a picture, providing indispensable clues to the material remains of the past and giving a bird's eye view of the area.
Dr. Sandra Wheatley, curator of maps at Aberystwyth University's Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, will be giving an introductory talk on maps for local and family historians, while Robert Davies, curator of maps at the National Library of Wales, will be providing a more detailed description of the maps held at the National Library.
Roger Hooper, Pembrokeshire County Council's rights-of-way officer, will be explaining how maps of the past can be used for current purposes.
The course organisers, Anita Thomas, of Haverfordwest Local Studies Library, and Nikki Bosworth, of the Pembrokeshire Record Office, will talk about the availability of maps within Pembrokeshire.
They will also introduce the practical session when participants will be able to find their way around original historical maps of Pembrokeshire with the aid of a worksheet.
Places on the course are limited so that booking is essential.
Application forms for the course can be obtained from your local library and the Pembrokeshire Record Office. Further information is available from the Local Studies Library in Haverfordwest (tel: 01437 775248) or the Pembrokeshire Record Office (tel: 01437 763707).
