Parents at Manorbier School were justifiably proud at last week's St. David's Day celebrations. The School Orchestra opened the concert with performances of Ar Hyd Y Nos and Calon Lan, setting the scene for a feast of Welsh pride. Children from the Early Years Class 1 sang, with the enviable enthusiasm of young children, Mr Hapus Ydw I and Anifeiliaid Ydw I, the actions for 'I'm a fish - Pysgodyn Ydw I' being particularly memorable. Class 2 sang and gave a wonderful example of Welsh dancing which left most of the parents feeling exhausted just from watching. Class 3 then demonstrated their burgeoning maturity, telling the history of St. David, displaying some beautiful artwork and giving a very moving and impressive oration of William Wordworth's (Daffodils) 'I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud'. Class 4 then sang two versions of Calon Lan, both the traditional version and a modern counterpart, which, quite literally, wowed the audience. The final spot of the morning was given over to Club Hwyl. The members, who are all members of the Urdd, performed a very entertaining play in Welsh (with translations for the more anglicised parents) about the life and works of St. David, followed by a rendition of Dydd Gwyl Dewi. The parents were obviously so awed by their children's efforts that they dutifully joined in a final singing of Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau to complete the morning. Tea and Welsh cakes followed for the parents, with money also being raised for Marie Curie Cancer Care with a daffodil sale. St. David would have been proud.
