AN interactive exploration of the reasons why individuals choose to give their valuable time to groups and causes and the way in which leaders can orchestrate their efforts, forms the theme of the next Chartered Management Institute event. 'Managing Volunteers' takes place on Thursday, May 18, at Pembrokeshire College, Haverfordwest.

It is presented by Hilary Harvey ACMI. Networking is from 6.30 pm, with a free buffet. The presentation will be from 7.30 to approximately 8.30 pm. Hilary Harvey has been the Wales Air Ambulance fund-raising co-ordinator for West Wales since July last year. Following a career in the commercial world of finance both in Britain and Dubai, she finds the voluntary sector intriguing and is ready to share some insights.

"Many of us commit time to committees, sports groups, or organisations with people, to whom the usual motivation of a salary or promotion is not the key driver," she said.

"With more of us taking early retirement or opting for a better work life balance, there will no doubt be an increase in the desire to put something back into the community and support worthwhile causes."

The evening will be an interactive session and you will have an opportunity to voice your views and discuss suggestions for successfully understanding, motivating and orchestrating the work and results of volunteers.

All are welcome and these evenings have proved to be valuable networking opportunities. This event is part of the Chartered Management Institute as part of their business events programme for West Wales. It is sponsored by hosts, Pembrokeshire College and the Businet programme. The evening is open to all, but pre-booking is required to assist with catering.
