A 48-year-old man has admitted stabbing to death his elderly mother.

Jarvis Ford, said to be 'very unwell', pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Margaret Ford, aged 84, at their home in Templeton.

The plea, entered on the grounds of diminished responsibility due to an abnormality of mind, was accepted by the prosecution at Swansea Crown Court on Wednesday and a charge of murder will not be proceeded with.

Judge John Diehl, the Recorder of Swansea, said he would sentence Ford on October 5 after he had heard from psychiatrists as to where he would be treated.

Meanwhile, Ford will be detained under the Mental Health Act in a secure mental unit.

Previous court hearings had been told how the family had moved from the West Midlands to the village of Templeton two years before the death of Mrs. Ford, on May 18.

It is understood that earlier in the day Ford had begun to act strangely and telephoned the police himself.

Officers visited the house, but left a short while later.

After they had gone, Mrs. Ford was stabbed nine times.

Ford's sister was alerted and police went to the house for a second time, where they found Mrs. Ford's body lying on the kitchen floor.

The prosecution will provide full details of the incident at the sentencing hearing on October 5.
