Sir,
I read with interest the article in last week's Observer regarding the 'Wonder Bins' on trial in Narberth. Clr. Wynne Evans looked suitably proud of this innovation into street cleaning in Narberth. Hopefully, as his fellow councillor Ken Rowlands remarked, 'these bins will save on bags and free our street cleaning staff to carry out other duties'.
Maybe the street cleaners can make a start on cleaning Back Lane (a walkway linking Spring Gardens with the High Street). The residents of Chapelfield Gardens (my 89-year-old mother being one) and surrounding area are risking life and limb on a daily basis using this lane.
The surface is uneven, often flooded, dog fouling is a daily occurrence, trees and brambles overhang the path and on a Monday evening and Tuesday morning the entrance to the lane opposite the Farmers Arms is almost completely blocked with boxes and rubbish from the High Street businesses that back onto the lane.
Promises have been made on numerous occasions by Clr. Evans and also members of the Town Council to address this serious situation, but as yet to no avail.
Introducing 'Wonder Bins' on to the High Street may be the way forward, but making the streets safe for the townsfolk of Narberth to use must be a higher priority. The voters of Narberth put their faith in Clr. Wynne Evans at the last election, so now is the time for him to ensure that their wellbeing is his first consideration.
