Can you make Christmas special for Pedr McMullen, a well respected Pembrokeshire name, in education, sport, the Welsh language and local politics?
Pedr currently resides in Brookland Nursing Home, near Saundersfoot where he is cared for by staff for his dementia and those who know him are being asked to send Christmas cards for him.
Twelve months ago, he spent time at Withybush Hospital after a motoring incident and following convalescence at South Pembrokeshire Hospital for a period, he made his move to Brooklands.
Pedr, originally from the Rhymney Valley, made his home in the County, living in Pembroke, but also spending time at his family home in Cardiff.
He taught for many years at Prendergast CPJM, in the Welsh language unit, before becoming Headteacher at Ysgol Glandwr, relinquishing this post only to care for his elderly mother who moved to Pembroke when she was unable to remain at home in Sloper Road, near Cardiff City football stadium.
“Football was one of his passions, where he was a stalwart referee, appearing on the football league line and officiating at the top end of Welsh football,” explained local sportsman Jonathan Twigg.
“He was the Wales representative on the Referees Association for a long period and oversaw the establishment of the Referees Association of Wales, where he was the inaugural Chairman.
“His friendships in football crossed the international spectrum and the stories associated to his exploits as one of the three amigos regaled still in the grandstands and clubhouses he frequented with aplomb.
“It wasn’t only football, which was a passion, Pedr for a number of years lead welsh language courses in the County, alongside residential courses at Lampeter University,” he continued.
“His love of the language and history meant he was well travelled, enjoying frequent sorties to Patagonia, the Welsh speaking area of Argentina.
“He welcomed visitors back to his home from the South American country to give them an experience of life which was so different to their culture.
“In his adopted town of Pembroke, he was a town councillor who was committed to the betterment of the area for all people, young or those not so.
“His face was recognisable as was he humour, Saturday evenings spent in the Eastgate in the company of friends from all walks of life, his enjoyment of ‘gwrw’ superseded with age like wine, his tipple of course the South American red merlot, as opposed to the Spanish grape!
Jonathan is asking for people to please find the time to send Pedr a Christmas Card this year (which will be regulated appropriately on arrival for Covid) - with a message from your club, school, council or language course, talking about memories and maybe some fun, you had alongside him.
You can send cards FAO?Pedr McMullen, Brooklands Nursing Home, Narberth Road, Saundersfoot, SA69 9DS.
