A local girl has written to Tenby Town Council, requesting that the De Valence Pavilion be used as a possible venue to stage a disco for the youngsters of the town.
Twelve-year-old Lucia Fecci, of Tenby, wrote with the request after becoming more and more frustrated at the lack of things to do for local youngsters, with some even going to such lengths as travelling to Swansea on a regular basis to attend a newly opened club called Time.
"Tenby is a little town with a lot of teenage children, but we are not given the chance to have a good time as the party and disco facilities are rubbish," said Lucia in her letter.
"There have recently been several cars full of children travelling up to Swansea to attend a new club called Time, where there is no alcohol served and everyone is searched for anything that could be a danger to anybody.
"It is held in a building similar to the De Valence, which I sometimes think is totally wasted and could be utilised better as entertainment or a disco for the town's children aged 12 and above. It would also benefit the De Valence by bringing in more money," continued Lucia.
Lucia believes more regular events and venues aimed at teenagers would help combat the problem of kids hanging around on the streets and causing trouble.
"People have started complaining that youngsters are stealing, getting drunk, beating each other up and generally making trouble, but what do you expect when there is nothing at all to do," commented Lucia.
Councillors responded to the letter, by offering to look into the possibility of staging a disco at the De Valence aimed at teenagers, with Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward backing the idea.
"I've been with some of the youngsters up to the club in Swansea and the facility is very safe for the kids and there is a strict no-alcohol policy and they must leave the premises by 10.30 pm," remarked Clr. Ward.
"I think as long as the event is done right and provides a proper disco, then it is worth looking into holding one at the De Valence."
