Three young Pembrokeshire swimmers - Isabelle Davies, Kelsey Williams and Carys Thomas - competed against the top swimmers in their age groups at the recent ASA British Age Group Championships in Sheffield.

All three swimmers train regularly with Pembrokeshire's County Performance Squad under swimming development coach Paul Dowey.

Eleven-year-old Isabelle Davies from Goodwick competed in four categories at the national championships - the first year she has been able to qualify.

The Ysgol Wdig/Goodwick School pupil developed her talent with Fishguard Flyers and raced in the 800m freestyle, the 1500m freestyle, the 200m butterfly and the 400m individual medley.

Eleven-year-old Kelsey from Haverfordwest competed in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events and 200m and 400m individual medley. The Ysgol Glan Cleddau pupil learnt to swim at Haverfordwest Swimming Pool and developed her talent with Haverfordwest Seals.

Twelve-year-old Carys Thomas from Pembroke swam in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 metres freestyle, 100m and 200m breaststroke, 200m butterfly, 200m and 400m individual medley at Sheffield. The Ysgol y Preseli pupil learnt to swim at four and is now a member of Pembroke and District swimming club.

All three Pembrokeshire swimmers qualified in two age groups for 16 events and had a top five finish in their number one event.

Every swimmer made a final.

Between the three swimmers, there were 15 x top 20 finishes, 10 x top 10 finishes, three x top 5 finishes, and seven finals.

Carys Thomas was placed eighth in BAGCAT points (a points scoring reward system taking into account the events entered) and as a girls' club, they came 24th with 37 points.

"Their hard work and effort and their commitment to the training programme has certainly produced results," said swimming development coach Paul Dowey.

"This year will be the best year so far to be associated and involved with Pembrokeshire County Swimming."
