The growing threat posed by climate change demands tougher action from our politicians. That is the message that Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth has sent to local MP, Nick Ainger. The environmental pressure group has written to the MP urging him to support strong measures in the Climate Change Bill to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. It believes that the Government should set targets to reduce carbon dioxide emission by at least three per cent a year and that emission from aircraft and shipping should also be taken into account. A Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth spokesperson said: "As scientific research is showing that the impacts of climate change are happening sooner and are worse than anticipated, politicians need to do far more to bring about cuts in the emission of the gases that are causing the problem. The proposals in the Bill are a step forward but are too weak to bring about the required changes. "We are calling on Nick Ainger to take a strong lead in helping to address the biggest problem we face this century. Although a great deal can be done to lessen the threat posed by climate change, such as improving energy efficiency and developing renewable energy systems, politicians have lacked the commitment to put effective measures into practice."
