A Monkton mother's newfound confidence in learning has seen her accomplish several new challenges in just a couple of years.

Lisa Wilson, a single parent to eight children and a grandmother of three, started a foundation degree with University of Wales Trinity St. David (UWTSD) in 2012.

The degree is delivered through Launch Learning at Monkton CP School.

"I have not studied since leaving school, but felt it was time that I did something for myself and also be a positive role model to my children and grandchildren," said Lisa.

Although a complete beginner with computers, she quickly achieved two IT courses, enjoyed the rest of the foundation degree, and now aims to study for the full BA honours degree next year.

"My computer skills have increased and so has my confidence," she said.

Since starting the degree, Lisa has also started volunteering as a mentor for people with drug and alcohol problems, learnt to drive, completed courses to train as a support worker, and volunteered as a teaching assistant at Monkton CP School.

"I have now applied to be a parent governor, as I feel confident enough to give my voice on behalf of all the parents here at Monkton School," she said.

Lisa said she was persuaded to start studying by Kellie Bellmaine, adult learning coordinator for Launch Learning, and Shelley Morris, headteacher at Monkton.

"My life has changed for the better and I would like to give special thanks to Kellie, Shelley and Jean, head lecturer at UWTSD, for having the confidence in me and the belief that I can reach my full potential," she said.

Kellie Bellmaine said: "Lisa is the reason that we have adult learning in Monkton.

"Her learning journey has empowered her and she is now aiming high. It is also having a major effect on her children.

"She is so enthusiastic and it is obvious how returning to education can have a positive impact, on both the student and their family."

Launch Learning is funded by Monkton School and Communities First. It works in partnership with Pembrokeshire County Council Learning Pembrokeshire, Pembrokeshire College, and University of Wales Trinity St. David.
