Lovely spring weather greeted a record turnout of 59 riders at the Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions Club sponsored horse ride recently at the Lydstep Point to Point course. An afternoon of enjoyable riding over the untried 10-mile course was had by all entrants, with only one mishap occuring; the first in the 10 years of this event being held, over the parishes of Lydstep, Penally and Manorbier countryside. Prior to the riders setting off on the course, they and their mounts were judged for best turned-out combinations in both horse and pony classes, as well as highest sponsored entrants. This is always a difficult task for the judges, with such a high standard taking part. President John Griffiths, who presented the trophies and rosettes to those who took part, offered sincere thanks to everyone from Tenby and Saundersfoot Lions Club members, and hoped that he would see them all again for the next ride later this year on Saturday, September 22. Such is the popularity of the event for the second ride planned for this year in aid of Lions' charities. This event is not a race and can be covered by riders of all ages and abilities whilst taking it at their own pace. At the end of the ride all were welcomed back to the Lions tent for appetising refreshments of hot soup and rolls. Winner of the Best Horse and Rider was Chris Sinclair James, of Johnston, with runner-up being Liz Handford, of Laugharne. Best Pony and Rider for the fourth year running was Charlotte Evans, from Tenby, who also won the trophy for Highest Sponsored Rider for the second year running. This lovely young lady has been a regular entrant over the years and continues to raise substantial amounts towards charitable causes with her excellent efforts - no doubt a horsewoman to be reckoned with in the future. Very well done Charlotte! Second place Pony and Rider was Jessica Hughes, of St. Florence. Runner-up Best Sponsored Rider was Lynne Jones, of Carew Cheriton. This year has seen previous records broken yet again for entrants and sponsorship raised for this popular event, and all riders have put in tremendous effort - thank you goes to them all. Stalwart support was again provided by Tenby Radio Repeater group, who have always given the event effective emergency radio cover and have quickly responded to any emergencies. Thanks also to Rose and Henry Davies for their judging duties on the day, which is never easy. A big thank you must go to the cadets of the Tenby ATC Squadron, under the leadership of Flight Lieutenant Dave Griffiths, CO, who always undertake their marshalling duties with great effect; always ready to help with a smile on their faces, erecting the tent with military precision and turning out in force from squadrons in Tenby, Pembroke Dock and Whitland to give their valuable and continued support. Without their help we would not be able to function at this event. They are all a credit to their squadrons, parents and communities. Thank you all so much. The event organisers are eternally grateful to the farmers who allow this event to be held on their land, namely the Mathias families, Mrs. Heather Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas and Mr. James Joseph. Without them there would simply be no event. Thank you all for your continued support. We hope to see you all in September!
