Sir,
We read in the papers and see on the news about the propossed HS2 high speed railway, with the government so keen on upgrading the South East around London, while life in West Wales, west of Cardiff, is left stagnant. The railway line from London to Fishguard is little better than when it was built by Brunel, with an average speed of 55 mph and the M4 dual carriageway ends in St. Clears.
Any road improvement west of St. Clears can only be classed as a cattle track and not a fast road link.
Should we in West Wales be more aggressive and ambitious and demand, yes demand, the upgrading of the road from St. Clears to Fishguard to dual way standard, with a high speed railway line from London to Fishguard to the standard of the proposed HS2? And a bridge linking the country with Ireland over a barrage to generate electricity to make use of the fast flowing current between Wales and Ireland?
This would cost less than the proposed HS2 which is a status luxury we do not need or can afford. Mrs. May, life does not end in Cardiff, but starts in St. David’s, Milford Haven, Angle and Ireland. Years ago, the people of West Wales knocked down the toll gates and I must ask the question is it time that we in this forgotten area rise up again and demand that we are recognised and respected? I and others do not ask for a letter of explanation, but practical deeds please.
Sir Eric Howells CBE,
Meadow View,
Llanddewi Velfrey,
