Six out of 10 lifeboat launches in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland are thanks to legacies to the RNLI. And Pembrokeshire is no exception. Plans to bring the new Tamar class lifeboat to Angle have received a massive boost thanks to two major legacies. First there was the very generous £137,385 gift handed over to the RNLI on behalf of the late Mrs. Jean Nicol Phillpott (nee McDonald), of Prospect Place, Pembroke Dock. This money will go towards the £2.5 million cost of the state-of-the-art Tamar, which will replace Angle's Tyne class lifeboat, The Lady Rank. Mrs. Phillpott, who passed away in July 2004, requested specifically that Angle lifeboat station should benefit from the donation. Her husband Ernest Phillpott (Phil), who died in June 1996, worked on the sea all his life and also wished for monies to be allocated to the RNLI, which provides a 24/7 search and rescue service every day of the year and continues to rely on voluntary donations and legacies for income. And now the lifeboat station is also to benefit from a bequest of over £700,000 from a Lancashire woman, Mrs. Josephine Anne Marriott, of Bolton. The RNLI has allocated this money towards the cost of the shoreworks at Angle to house the new Tamar, due to go into service there in the summer of 2008. Mrs. Marriott and her late husband, a former borough treasurer of Bolton, were staunch supporters of the charity. Lifeboat operations manager at Angle, John Allen Mirehouse, emphasised how grateful the people of Angle were that Mrs. Phillpott's and Mrs. Marriott's very generous bequests should go towards the cost of the new lifeboat and adapting the station to house it. "It is wonderful that so many people continue to very generously support the good work of the RNLI and its brave volunteer crews in saving lives at sea," he said. • The new Tamar class lifeboat can withstand the worst of conditions and is designed to be faster, safer and more effective than its predecessors. The appeal to raise £1 million towards its cost is well underway. To make a donation visit the appeal website at http://www.tamar4angle.org.uk">www.tamar4angle.org.uk
