The first customers took advantage of the newly extended Post Office service at Lawrenny last week, but the message from Post Office Ltd. was very much one of 'use it or lose it'. Following discussions with the local Member of Parliament, Assembly Member and Postwatch the previous week, Post Office Ltd. agreed to supplement the original proposals for a HomeService with an additional two-hour on-site service. Now, every Tuesday between 2.45 and 4.45 pm, the subpostmaster from Pembroke branch, Mr. Mark Wilson, will set up the branch for use by locals. Tony Jones, Post Office rural development manager, said: "More than the actions of demonstrators and campaigners, it was the talks that we had with the elected representatives and with Postwatch, the consumer body, that was influential in persuading me to review the case and to trial this extended two-hour service. However, they understand that the fundamental issue is one of usage, so talk of extending the service further is premature. "I need to be convinced that the community, after many years of failing to support the branch, can now demonstrate an ongoing level of commitment to Mark Wilson. We shall be monitoring and reviewing the situation on an ongoing basis and failure to demonstrate this commitment may well see the original proposals being implemented," Mr. Jones concluded.

First customers to make use of the new service are local residents Mrs. W. M. Rees and Mr. Kevin Hart, with subpostmaster Mark Wilson behind the counter.
