AN exhibition of landscape painting will be on show at Pembrokeshire's Picton Castle Gallery next month.

Graduates and current degree students at Coleg Sir Gâr will be combining their talents for an exhibition entitled 'Of Landscape', which runs from July 1-28. Artists who have graduated within the last 10 years at the college will be exhibiting with current students completing the BA honours course in fine art painting which, from September; will incorporate printmaking and drawing as the college partners with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David as the new School of Creative Arts.

The landscape theme isn't a surprising one considering the artists live in and around south-west Wales, says lecturer Cath Roche.

"All exhibiting artists engage with the notion of landscape in some way within these works," she said. The exhibition offers a diverse and contemporary approach to the subject, exploring both real and imagined spaces, with artists motivated by either personal or universal concerns regarding land, landscape and nature.

"It is fitting that the exhibition is situated in the striking grounds of Picton Castle, a place of intense inspiration for the late British landscape painter Graham Sutherland, " she continued. "Following in the footsteps of Sutherland, some of the work on show is made in direct response to the site of Picton Castle and its surrounding area.

"Other works seen here form part of each artist's continuing enquiry into place and space and have been inspired by various locations and other references to land and landscapes."

'Of Landscape' will be exhibited at Picton Castle Gallery at 10.30 am -5 pm from July 1 - 28.
